Festivals of the Jukun

From the royal Puje to the thundering Nwonyo, the Jukun year is shaped by festivals that bind the nation to its throne, its rivers, and its ancestors.

The Major Festivals

Three pillars of the Jukun year

Puje
Festival

Puje

Annual · Dry season Wukari, Taraba State

The Puje is the great national festival of the Jukun — a sacred royal gathering at the palace of the Aku Uka. Subjects, chiefs, and diaspora return to Wukari to renew their allegiance to the throne, witness ancestral rites, and celebrate the continuity of Kwararafa.

Nwonyo Fishing Festival
Festival

Nwonyo Fishing Festival

April · Annual River Donga, Ibi LGA

One of Nigeria's most spectacular cultural events — thousands of fishermen wade into the Nwonyo lake at a single signal, competing to land the largest catch. Drums, canoe races, and royal processions make Nwonyo a calendar highlight for the entire region.

Kuchichep & Yaku Keji
Festival

Kuchichep & Yaku Keji

Seasonal · Throughout the year Wukari & traditional districts

A constellation of harvest rites, planting blessings, and lineage ceremonies that punctuate the Jukun year — each tied to specific clans, sacred groves, and the spiritual office of the Aku Uka.
